The state law used to commit mental patients against their will is now being used to hold alcoholics at an Anchorage treatment center that held its grand opening Wednesday. The involuntary commitment provision has been allowed for years under state law, specifically Title 47, which is used to commit people for psychiatric treatment at the state mental hospital. Beyond differences in substance and message, the campaigns of the two finalists for mayor of the Fairbanks North Star Borough offer a contrast in style and resources. Where Luke Hopkins has received a level of financial support not seen for a municipal candidate in Fairbanks in years, Tammie Wilson has received backing through a small-budget, door-to-door campaign. The candidates split two-thirds of the vote in the municipal election's first round.

Gov. Sean Parnell is proposing the state pay the entire Alaska college or job training tuition for every high school student who graduates with a A average and takes four years of math, science and language arts. Students who graduate with a B could get 75 percent of their tuition covered under the plan. Even C-plus students would get half their tuition paid for by the state under what the new governor wants to call the Governor's Performance Scholarship.

No matter who you are, no matter where you live, no matter what your personal circumstances, you can get a college education or you can get the job training you need to be a vital part of our work force   -Sean Parnell

Anchorage's only methadone clinic, facing an influx of patients and not enough funding to treat them, has stopped accepting into treatment all new patients, including pregnant women. The downtown Narcotic Drug Treatment Center has been plagued with waiting lists for years, and until last week was accepting pregnant women on a priority basis. It now has 87 patients on its active roster but is only funded for 85, said clinical director Ron Greene.

If Rep. Scott Kawasaki, D-Fairbanks, has been irritable this week, it's for good reason. He's hungry. The state lawmaker normally eats five meals per day, big and small, including meat, fresh fruit and fresh vegetables.
